Exercise during Pregnancy
It is extremely important to keep moving during pregnancy. Here are some things to consider:
1. Choose appropriate exercises: Opt for low-impact exercises that are gentle on your joints and muscles eg. pilates, swimming, yoga, aqua aerobics, walking, stationary bike, personal training. The hormones will change the way the body moves.
2. Listen to your body: Pay attention to how your body feels during exercise. You may need to try a few different things before finding what is right for you.
3. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise to stay hydrated. Dehydration can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy.
4. Avoid overheating: Pregnant women are more susceptible to overheating, so avoid exercising in hot and humid environments. Wear loose, breathable clothing, and take breaks as needed to cool down.
5. Modify as needed: As your pregnancy progresses, you may need to modify your exercise routine to accommodate your changing body. This may involve reducing the intensity, duration, or frequency of your workouts and avoiding exercises that put excessive strain on your abdomen.
6. Pelvic floor exercises: Pelvic floor exercises, are particularly beneficial during pregnancy and can help strengthen the muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowels. I refer my patients to a pelvic floor physiotherapist for guidance on performing pelvic floor exercises correctly.
7. Posture and body mechanics: Pay attention to your posture and body mechanics during exercise to prevent injury and discomfort.
8. Listen to your body: If you feel tired or fatigued, it's okay to take a break or scale back your workout intensity. Remember that pregnancy is a time of significant physical changes, and it's essential to prioritise your health and well-being.
Remember to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any exercise routine during pregnancy. Listen to your body and choose activities that feel comfortable and safe for you and your baby. Let's stay active and embrace the journey to a healthy pregnancy! 💪👶
